Bar & Restaurant, Greenwich, London, 2010
When I started this project at Real Studios, the main brief was that the restaurant would be a high traffic cafe during the day, servicing the Discover Greenwich exhibition next door. However during the evening, when the exhibition was closed, this would transform into an elegant dining space.
The grandiose double height space, was emphasised by large format graphics on the walls showcasing the different types of beer bottles, with a Greenwich time line running around the perimeter. The other main feature of the space was the wave ceiling feature comprising of almost 2000 official Meantime bottles. This feature, located over reclaimed timber tables, helped to create a more intimate dining area.
THE REVIEW
“ the restaurant space is altogether on a different scale, with a swagger to match the epic surroundings. Only the Wapping Project, housed in a converted power station a couple of miles upriver, can rival the room for sheer wow factor. Huge industrial lamps create pools of light and shade, and a sculptural wave of beer bottles is suspended unnervingly overhead”Tracey MacLeod, The Independent, 26.06.10
Below are some of the concept sketches done when working with the client on the graphics and the position of the bottle feature ceiling.
